Their offer is a clue, not a plan
Compare how competitors present offers and products, then write original hypotheses your margin and stock can support.
Read the offer and the shelf separately
The pressure peaks around promotions: a rival’s sale appears, and the first question is what discount would match it. But an ad carries two decisions at once. The offer is the mechanic: a bundle, a shipping threshold, a gift, a subscription, a first-order incentive. The shelf is the merchandising: which product or collection leads, how it is staged, and what sits beside it as proof or reassurance. It is easy to react to the offer and miss the shelf.
Both are easy to over-read. A rival’s promotion may rest on margin, stock, or timing you cannot see, and copying it can commit you to terms you cannot afford. A featured product shows what an advertiser chose to present, not how it sold.
Separating the two gives you better questions for your own catalog: not “should we match this?” but “what is the shopper being asked to do, and can we honor that for our products?”
From competitor offers to your own hypotheses
Work through the records in this order and keep each step in writing. It turns a pile of promotions into something your growth and merchandising leads can decide on.
Ad8 supplies the records. Your catalog, your margins, and your store data decide what is worth testing.
Sort by mechanic. Group records by what the shopper is asked to do. Keep stated conditions attached to each claim, and mark missing terms as unknown.
Note the merchandising. Record which product or collection leads, how it is staged, and what proof or reassurance sits beside it. Note what the ad leaves out as well as what it shows.
Check your constraints. Margin, stock depth, shipping cost, returns, and landing page readiness decide what you can honor. This workflow compares visible advertising claims; it does not verify checkout prices or terms.
Write original hypotheses. State the shopper problem, your own offer, the proof you can supply, and one variable. Leave out claims you cannot substantiate.
Measure in your own systems. Judge each test with your store and analytics data. Competitor record counts are never the criterion.
Illustrative scenario: a spring collection
Imagine a hypothetical online tea shop planning a spring collection. In the newly observed static ads for its tracked Pages, some lead with a bundle discount, while another shows a single product beside a stated shipping threshold. The team notes which ads show the saving first and which show what is in the box. None of this shows how those ads sold.
Then the team checks its own constraints. Stock is deep on the starter set and thin on a limited tin, and a steep bundle discount would not fit the margin. The team drops the idea of matching the discount and writes two hypotheses it can honor: describe the starter set by what the customer receives rather than by savings, and test a shipping-threshold prompt on the hero product.
This is a fictional example, not a customer story or a finding about any real advertiser.
The deliverable is a one-page offer and merchandising sheet. Each row holds the observation with record references, the offer mechanic, the product emphasis, your constraint, the original hypothesis, and the metric and guardrail you will track in your own store analytics.
Rows that need an unsupported claim or someone else’s creative are struck out and kept as notes, so nobody rediscovers them next season.
Where the research stops
The records are collected ads, primarily static. They do not show competitor sales, conversion rates, inventory, margin, or what a promotion cost, and Ad8 does not read your store or advertising accounts.
Landing pages, checkout terms, and fulfillment promises sit outside the records, so confirm them yourself before an ad ships.
Coverage varies by Page and market, so check the notes before reading a gap as inactivity. Core is proposed as a single-user workspace. If several teammates need access, describe your setup through the contact workflow; it will be scoped separately, and nothing here promises team seats.
Share what you learn as your own briefs, built on your own products and assets.
